Host support

Run the quiz and keep the room moving.

Open the section you need. The most important rule is to continue hosting while one device or screen recovers.

Getting ready

Before teams join

  1. Open the host dashboard.
  2. Open the audience screen if a TV or projector is available.
  3. Check the join code and QR code are visible.
  4. Join once with your own phone.
  5. Tell teams to use one phone per team.
Running from a laptop
  • Use the laptop for the host dashboard.
  • Open the audience screen on the TV, projector, or a second browser window.
  • Keep the laptop awake and plugged in if possible.
Running from a tablet
  • Use landscape mode for larger host controls.
  • Keep the tablet on charge during the quiz.
  • Use the copy TV link button if another device is opening the audience screen.
Running from a phone
  • Use phone hosting only for small tests or emergency backup.
  • Open the host dashboard on the phone and keep it awake.
  • If possible, use a separate device for the audience screen.
Running a short pub test
  • Open Launch Status and confirm the app is ready.
  • Open the host dashboard and start a fresh quiz session.
  • Open the TV audience screen before inviting teams.
  • Connect the room sound source or mic and check players can hear clearly.
  • Join once with a test phone and confirm the team appears.
  • Invite teams to join with the QR code or join code.
  • Run questions normally: question, answer lock, reveal, score check, leaderboard.
  • After question 10-12, wait until the room has seen an answer reveal and leaderboard.
  • Press End quiz, confirm the final winner screen, and record any issues after the room has finished.

TV setup

Choose what matches the venue

The audience display is a web page. Keep the host dashboard private on the device running the quiz.

No TV connection

Run the quiz as a hosted read-out. Teams still answer on phones, and the host reads each question aloud.

  • Keep the host dashboard visible only to the host.
  • Read the question and timer clearly.
  • Reveal the leaderboard verbally after each round.
Limited TV access

Use one TV or projector as the main audience display. It does not need to be visible from every seat.

  • Show the lobby QR and join code first.
  • Read questions aloud for teams that cannot see the screen.
  • Use the TV for leaderboards and winner reveals.
Full TV access

Open the audience screen on every TV that can show a browser or mirrored display.

  • Set screens up before teams join.
  • Check text is readable from the back of the room.
  • Keep all TVs on the same audience URL.
TV browser

Use this when the TV, Fire Stick, Android TV, hotel TV, or connected box can open a web browser.

  • Open the audience screen directly on the TV browser.
  • Use the TV remote to type the screen link, or copy the link from the host dashboard and send it to the device.
  • Keep the host dashboard on your laptop, tablet, or phone.
  • Refresh the TV browser if it falls behind.
HDMI from laptop

Use this when the TV cannot open a browser, but you can plug a laptop into it.

  • Connect the laptop to the TV with HDMI.
  • Open the audience screen in a browser tab and move it onto the TV display.
  • Keep the host dashboard on the laptop screen if you can use extended display mode.
  • If the TV mirrors the laptop screen, do not show the host dashboard to the room.
Wireless casting or screen mirroring

Use this only if it is stable. Pub Wi-Fi and casting devices can lag during a live quiz.

  • Cast only the audience screen, not the host dashboard.
  • Test it before teams join.
  • If it drops out, keep hosting from your device and read questions aloud.
  • Use the TV again for leaderboard reveals if the cast reconnects.

Live recovery

Fix a problem

Find the symptom, check the simple causes, then use the suggested action.

QR code is not scanning
Check
  • The TV is showing the current lobby.
  • The phone browser opened play.hostmyquiz.co.uk.
  • The host has not locked joining.
Do
  • Ask teams to enter the four-digit join code manually.
  • Read the join code aloud.
  • Keep the lobby open until the team appears.
A team joined with the wrong name
Check
  • The team is visible in the Teams panel.
  • No other team is already using the corrected name.
Do
  • Rename the team from the host dashboard before starting the first question.
  • If the quiz has started, keep playing and rename between questions.
A phone refreshes or loses signal
Check
  • The same phone is being used.
  • The team has not cleared the device.
  • The current question has not timed out.
Do
  • Ask the team to reopen the same link.
  • If the answer was already submitted, reassure them it is locked in.
  • Use score correction only for a clear one-team issue.
A team cannot answer or submits late
Check
  • The timer is still running.
  • The team has not already submitted.
  • Other teams can still answer normally.
Do
  • Do not restart the quiz for one phone.
  • Keep the room moving.
  • Use manual score controls after the reveal if a correction is needed.
Players cannot read the question clearly
Check
  • The audience screen is visible from most seats.
  • The phone screen can scroll to the question and answer options.
  • The issue affects more than one team.
Do
  • Read the question aloud once before starting the timer if needed.
  • Ask affected teams to turn narrow phones sideways.
  • Pause briefly only if the room cannot see or hear the question.
The TV screen falls behind
Check
  • The host dashboard is still changing state.
  • The TV is on screen.hostmyquiz.co.uk.
  • The TV browser still has network access.
Do
  • Refresh the audience screen.
  • Keep hosting from the dashboard while the TV reloads.
  • Read the question aloud if the TV is still catching up.
A question is wrong or unreadable
Check
  • The issue affects the room, not just one device.
  • The answer has not already been fairly revealed.
Do
  • Use Skip current question.
  • Tell the room the question is void.
  • Continue with the next question rather than resetting.
The host screen seems stuck
Check
  • The internet connection is still active.
  • The action button is not disabled because the quiz is waiting for answers.
  • The TV and player screens may still be correct.
Do
  • Refresh the host dashboard once.
  • Use the sticky host dock to confirm the current state.
  • Avoid reset unless teams have not joined or you are deliberately restarting.
